Garbage Grinder Charge Revenue for 2010

The use of garbage grinders increases the suspended solids and BOD5 an average of 0.03 lbs. per person per day per average household. Using plant design data, it was calculated that 21.38 lbs. BOD5 and 21.38 lbs. of suspended solids (SS) annually can be attributed to a residential home with a garbage grinder.

The costs for treating 1 lb. of BOD5 and 1 lb. of SS were calculated at $0.49 per lb. of BOD5 and $0.52 per lb. of SS respectively. The costs are based on actual transportation and treatment costs and the actual BOD5 and SS received, and subsequently, treated at the treatment plant.

Therefore, the garbage grinder charge is as shown below:

 BOD5

           21.38 lbs. BOD5     x $0.49     = $10.48   ÷   12 months  =  $0.87

year              1 lb. BOD5        year                             month

Suspended Solids

           21.38 lbs. SS         x $0.52     = $11.12   ÷    12 months = $0.93
year                 1 lb. SS           year                   month

Therefore, the total charge for garbage grinder equals $1.80 per month. The anticipated revenue to be received in Fiscal Year 2010 from this special charge is estimated to be $106,272.40 as determined below:

4,920 customers x $1.80/customer/month x 12 months/year = $106,272.00
